Uganda, 6th

by: Philip Briggs, Andrew Roberts

Somebody once said that if you planted a walking stick overnight in the soil of Uganda, it would take root before morning dawned. Of all Africa’s safari destinations, this is the most fertile. It’s also the best destination in Africa for seeing a variety of primate species – visitors can spot more than ten types of monkey including mountain gorillas and chimpanzees. And if primate enthusiasts are found wandering round with imbecile grins, Uganda’s birds have ornithologists doing cartwheels: more than 1,000 bird species have been recorded here making Uganda, in practical terms, the finest birdwatching destination in Africa.

Uganda's plantation workers' fate in limbo

More than 500 tree-plantation workers in Uganda may lose their jobs after a UK-based forestry company, which hired them, has decided to suspended plantations for this year in the wake of what it calls bad publicity. The international charity organization, Oxfam, in its report claims thousands of people's lives were ruined when they were evicted from their farmland to make way for the plantations. International Finance Corporation, an arm of the World Bank, has decided to withdraw funds from the plantations. Oxfam says the company did not comply with international regulations, and that's the reason some investors are pulling out. Al Jazeera's Malcolm Webb reports from Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Uganda Discovery - The Pearl of Africa HD

Uganda, officially the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country in East Africa. Uganda is also known as the "Pearl of Africa". It is bordered on the east by Kenya, on the north by Sudan, on the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on the southwest by Rwanda, and on the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, which is also bordered by Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompassed a portion of the south of the country including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1700 to 2300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.[4] Uganda gained independence from Britain on 9 October 1962. The official languages are English and Swahili, although multiple other languages are spoken in the country. It is a member of the African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations, Organisation of the Islamic Conference and East African Community.

US sends combat troops to Uganda

Barack Obama, the US president, has announced he is sending combat troops to Uganda to help efforts against rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army, who Washington accuse of grievous human rights abuses. A force of 100 trainers and advisers will take part in the hunt for Joseph Kony, one of central Africa's most brutal rebel leaders. Many are questioning as why the US, already involved in two long wars, would commit its forces to this mission. Al Jazeera's Anand Naidoo reports from Washington.
